Circle / ray / attention

Radiance is a structure before it is a symbol

Halos, rings, rays and centers organize a viewer’s attention, but their meanings change with material, setting, culture and use.

01

Begin with geometry

Trace center, interval, repetition and interruption before assigning symbolism. A ring may frame, separate, measure or intensify; those functions are observable even when intention remains uncertain.

02

Keep light material

Gold leaf, angled tesserae, polished metal and translucent glass produce different kinds of brightness. Naming the carrier prevents light from becoming an empty metaphor.

03

Return form to context

A halo in a panel painting, a radial survey instrument and a circular workshop diagram may resemble one another without sharing origin or purpose.
