Leaf / ground / burnish

Gold is often a surface system

Leaf, foil, powder and amalgam place a small quantity of gold over another material; the support and method remain part of the visible result.

01

Name the layer

Gold leaf over bole behaves differently from amalgam gilding on metal. The word gold describes appearance poorly unless the substrate, binder and finishing method are also considered.

02

Read the preparation

Ground layers, hatching, size, burnishing and punchwork can shape reflection as much as the leaf itself. Surface brilliance is assembled through several trades and stages.

03

Do not romanticize danger

Historic fire gilding exposed workers to mercury vapour. Its visual legacy can be studied without presenting a hazardous process as an attractive contemporary craft recipe.
